As the weekend quickly approaches, we are busily preparing for guests, racers and spectators alike as they prepare for one of the busiest event weekends of the summer for Coeur d’Alene, the Ironman Triathlon. This adrenaline fueled race brings over 3,000 participants for the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike trail and 26.2 mile run course.
Ironman makes a huge impact in Coeur d’Alene in more than one way. Overall the race brings in over $7 million to the Coeur d’Alene community. One year, Ironman even paid out $5,000 to Little Caesar’s pizza for it’s pie bill. When the race began in CDA, it had about 1,900 participants, and has quickly grown to it’s figure of over 3,000 now. Ironman also donates money to community organizations every year; in 2011, it paid out over $55,000 to local businesses.
The Ironman Race becomes a lifestyle for both Coeur d’Alene locals and visitors. Most competitors train all year for the race, and even compete in multiple, smaller triathlons throughout the year. But Ironman is the big one, offering 50 qualifying spots for the Ironman World Championship taking place in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
